Frequently Asked Questions - MIMU Maps and geospatial data support

This page contains answers to frequently asked questions, about MIMU and its products including spatial data and maps, HDP Nexus 5W products, Baseline Data and other resources which support humanitarian, development and peace-focused activities across Myanmar. Feedback and comments are very welcome and can be sent to [email protected]

What kind of maps are available from MIMU?

MIMU provides three different types of maps:

  • Base Maps showing different geographical aspects of the country for reference, planning and emergency preparedness;
  • Thematic Maps which explore particular aspects of the country. Examples include mapping of population, agency activities across the country (the MIMU 3W), disaster/hazard affected areas, health and education facilities, differing provision of monastic education, transport networks, electrical grids, trade crossing points etc.; and
  • Customized maps can be prepared on request for specific purposes. This service is available for humanitarian, development and peace-focused initiatives by partner agencies (those contributing to MIMU products), and others including donors and research entities.

What is the resolution of MIMU maps? What is not included?

The resolution of MIMU maps varies, depending on availability, accuracy and reliability of the spatial data and information sources, always aiming to high quality and effectiveness. MIMU provides maps from country to village tract level using base maps developed from locally available information as well as satellite data (mainly for disaster impacts). MIMU does not prepare maps showing locations within cities or villages. Villages for which we have no geocoordinates will not appear on MIMU maps but will be documented in the MIMU Place codes.

How do I find the map I am looking for?

  • MIMU Base Maps and Thematic Maps can be found in the Maps section of the GIS Resources page under GIS Resources & Agency Maps in the Main Menu.
  • Customized Maps can be found in the Agency Maps page under GIS Resources & Agency Maps in the Main Menu.
  • We try to keep all older maps available through our website, but due to limitations on its size, it may not be easy – if you are seeking an older map or unable to find something, please contact the MIMU Resource Centre directly.

What are Customized Maps? How do I request a customized map?

  • Customized maps are prepared by MIMU at the request of MIMU partner organisations and Myanmar-based donors. Such maps are generally based on a combination of data provided by the requesting agency/department, and some background data from MIMU. These maps are provided free-of-charge and must be requested with advance notice.
  • Customized maps can be requested from MIMU by completing a Customized Map Request Form and providing the required, cleaned and Place-coded information/data ready for mapping. The MIMU team will then work with the focal point of the requesting agency to clarify the best visualisation for that purpose and additional information needs.

Are all MIMU maps public? What if my data is confidential?

Unless otherwise agreed, it is standard practice for MIMU to post completed products on the MIMU website. If your data is confidential, you must inform MIMU to ensure that the product is not published and remains confidential. Provision is made for this in the Customized Map Request Form.

Does MIMU provide printed maps and how much will it cost?

MIMU can support a limited number of paper prints of MIMU products free of charge for operational purposes at the request of partner organisations and donors. Please note, however, that our budget for this activity is limited and users can also download maps published on the MIMU website and have these printed on vinyl or paper in local printing shops at a low cost. Contact the MIMU Resource Centre for more information.

Can I use MIMU maps in a publication?

Yes – provided that (1) you do not make any changes to MIMU products without our written agreement, (2) the product is not sold, and (3) MIMU is fully acknowledged as a source. More details can be found under Terms and Conditions on our website.

Can I use MIMU spatial information in my interactive site?

No – you cannot do this without a written agreement with MIMU. MIMU spatial data and products are compiled to support humanitarian, development and peace-focused activities in Myanmar. Due to limitations on the data available to produce these products, there are restrictions on the way in which this data can be used on interactive or web mapping platforms. More information is available in the MIMU Terms and Conditions of Use.

Can I disseminate MIMU datasets through my own website?

No – we ask that you do not do this without an agreement with MIMU. This is to avoid out-of-date information on different websites.

Why are some village names not on the MIMU maps? How can this be corrected?

Village names may not show on MIMU maps due to three issues:

  • The village is not yet included in the MIMU P-code database: The MIMU Place codes include officially registered villages as well as villages which are as-yet unregistered but have been reported and verified by field sources. Please provide necessary information to have this village included in the Place code database using the Pcode Submission and Correction Form which should be forwarded to MIMU.
  • We don’t yet have the village GPS coordinates, hence it cannot be mapped: Through its work with agencies active in the country, MIMU has been able to collect the GPS coordinates for 78% of villages listed in the MIMU Place Code database – your village must be among the outstanding 22%. Detail on how to collect and report the village GPS coordinates to MIMU can be found in our P-code Request Form or by contacting the MIMU GIS team ([email protected] or [email protected]).
  • The village is no longer listed as “active” for some reason: Some villages which have been delisted or reclassified in official notifications and for which we have no other information may not appear on MIMU map updates. Such villages continue to be recorded in the MIMU Place Code listing which tracks historical changes back to 2010.

What are the MIMU Place codes?

Place codes are unique identifiers for settlements across the country – like postal or zip codes. This is part of a system used internationally where settlements are not coded with any other widely used system. The Place codes allow data from different sources to be brought together for comparison or analysis at different administrative levels (namely State/Region, Township, Village Tract or Village levels), such as linking education and employment data for a particular village tract, or malaria data and forest cover to better understand areas at risk. MIMU has established the Place codes in Myanmar for use by humanitarian and development agencies  – allowing data from different sources to be brought together and mapped using the spatial data compiled by MIMU. More detail about the Place Codes is available in English and Myanmar languages.
