Education and Disability Sub Working Group

Education and Disability Sub Working Group is established in 2014. Its Co-chairs are Myanmar Education Consortium (MEC) and VSO; role of Co-chairs will rotate by group decision and free nomination. The Education and Disability Sub Working Group is doing monthly meetings. As the Education Thematic Working Group (ETWG) has established a number of sub-groups in key technical areas in line with jointly identified priorities of EFA. These sub-groups are responsive to the context and evolve as deemed appropriate by members.

The Vision of Education and Disability Sub Working Group is for equity and inclusion in Education in line with education reform process in Myanmar and the post-2015 global development agenda. As Myanmar signed the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities in 2012, and is currently developing a national law for implementation of the Convention. This will include education rights, and a number of education laws are under development, we are to support for it.

At regular meetings of Education and Disability Sub Working Group, updates and resources are shared, workshops on technology and access to education are done, information or links for education are pooled, regular activities as a group are planned for, and ways to support education reform process in Myanmar is sought. Education and Disability Sub Working Group collaborates with MoE and all partner organizations who are working in the education sector for the people with disabilities in Myanmar. Education and Disability Sub Working Group is also collaborating with other sub working groups such as, Basic Education, Myanmar Teachers Education working group, Education in Emergencies, Disaster Prepared and Response in Education, Early Childhood Care Development, Non Formal Education and Higher Education.

Globally, it is noted that children with disabilities are most at risk of being excluded from education. Current figures for Myanmar indicate that 53 percent of children with disabilities are out of school. The task of the Education and Disability Sub Working Group is in the reform process to be provided an opportunity to ensure that children with disabilities are able to enjoy their rights to a quality education.
